After all the poking and prodding which went into our review of the XP-equipped Eee PC, we couldn't resist trying a few simple optimisations. Why? Well, just because, okay? We're geeks: we don't need an excuse!

I have been looking for a cheap and seamless way to connect to the internet on my ASUS Eee with the minium of equipment and no hassle.

I considered internal HSDPA but eventually decided on this method to avoid modding my Eee and save on cost (data is cheaper as an addon to my t-mobile contract than as a seperate contract).

That was the fastest XP install I have ever done. The trimmed down install was very small It booted right up into 640×480 32bit color. The left and right mouse buttons were reversed. Figuring that out took longer than changing it did. TIME TO MAKE ROOM- Kill that virtual memory

There are a lot of guides on how to install XP on your EEEPC which are really great and I appreciate the time and effort that has been put into them… but if you’re like me, some of you may have tried and failed due to one reason or another. In my case, I had XP2002 which won’t install on the EEEPC as the guides will tell you.

Easy to disassemble, easy to upgrade, and easy to create warranty headaches is probably the slogan many advanced users will be thinking soon after they get their hands on an Asus Eee PC. During our initial review we realized that this device had so much more potential than what we had first expected. Not counting the storage limitation, this little machine was as powerful as notebooks four to five times its price. The Xandros Linux environment could be expanded with more traditional programs, and better yet this device could fully support Windows XP out of the box. We also wanted to touch on upgrading the Eee PC, since its stock configuration doesn’t really have as much ram as what you would want for more stressing software.

Some users will probably enjoy the minimalistic Linux environment included on the Eee PC out of the box, and not want to drastically change anything ... just add a few programs. Jerry, our site editor, fell into this crowd and found that one program lacking from the Eee PC out of the box was Gimp, a photo editor. You could see mentioning of this program if you tried to open image files, but it was a dead link that would introduce you to a helpful error stating “Could not find the program 'The'”. Needless to say it got our hopes up, but left us wanting more.

Utility to modify a Windows installation CD so that it can be installed onto an SD card for use in your 3epc.

You just need to copy the contents of your CD to your hard drive, then run the utility and voila it will produce an iso ready to be burned to CD for installing Windows XP onto your 3epc so that it can then transferred to an SD card.

One of the reservations many have about purchasing a Xandros Eee PC, or any notebook running Linux for that matter, is the Linux operating system's inability to run their favorite Windows based programs. Lots of applications are released with a Linux version, but some like iTunes and Adobe Photoshop, aren't.

Windows XP is so yesterday... we couldn’t get really super downright excited about the new Eee PC 1000H until we installed Windows Vista Ultimate. So that's just what we tried to do...

The Eee is a great little device, but why not make it that little bit better? How's 1GHz sound for a speed boost?

Overclocking the Eee is the best way to improve its performance. Many people add extra RAM, faster RAM (which is a waste of time, more on this later), and cut down their OSs (see here) in order to squeeze every last bit of processing power available.

What is overclocking?

Overclocking is the process of increasing component clock speeds above stock.

Theory behind overclocking

Overclocking is not a difficult concept, but it does require some background knowledge. Due to the identical processing hardware in each Eee PC, knowing the theory isn't essential for this guide, but if you're interested, read this tutorial on the subject here.
